Hello. My name is Silvina. I’ve been living in San Telmo for more than 20 years.
What kind of neighborhood is San Telmo?

It is the oldest and most emblematic neighborhood in Buenos Aires, renowned for its well-preserved colonial architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and deep-rooted tango culture. What happened in 1871?Originally the residential heart for the city's elite, it was largely abandoned after a yellow fever epidemic in 1871, leading many grand mansions to be converted into conventillos (tenement houses) for European immigrants. San Telmo is more accurately described as a historic area rather than a "historical" one. While the two terms are often used interchangeably, "historic" is the preferred adjective for a place with significant and preserved ties to the past. Why "Historic" Fits Best Significance: It is the oldest neighborhood in Buenos Aires, characterized by preserved colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. Official Status: It contains numerous sites officially designated as National Historic Monuments, such as the San Telmo Market and the San Pedro Telmo Church. Cultural Identity: The area is a "living relic" where major events like the 1816 declaration of independence and the 1871 yellow fever epidemic took place. Top Historic Sites to Visit Plaza Dorrego: The neighborhood's heart and the site of a world-famous Sunday Antiques Fair. El Zanjón de Granados: A restored 1830s mansion featuring a network of tunnels and waterways beneath the city. Casa Mínima: Known as the narrowest house in Buenos Aires, measuring only 2.5 meters wide. National Museum of History: Located in Parque Lezama, this museum documents Argentina’s 19th-century history.
